Settling Into College: Finding Home Away From Home
Transitioning into college signified the commencement of an entirely new phase in my life. The exhilaration of entering an unfamiliar environment was intertwined with the melancholy of departing from home. Leaving home was emotionally demanding, not merely because I was separating from my family, but also because I was parting from the comfort, familiarity, and affection that made life serene and effortless. The initial days in the hostel were particularly challenging.
The monotonous mess food could never replicate the wholesome flavour or warmth of meals cooked with love at home. Each meal served as a poignant reminder of my mother’s cooking, her meticulous care, her attention to taste, and the affection woven into every dish. Those moments deepened my sense of homesickness and longing for the simplicity of home life.
Adjusting to college life was far from effortless. Everything appeared unfamiliar, the people, the atmosphere, and the rigorous routine. However, circumstances began to change when I encountered individuals from my own state. By a pleasant coincidence, my roommate happened to belong to the same region. Conversing in our native language, reminiscing about our hometown, and sharing cultural memories provided immense comfort. It was reassuring to have someone who understood my background and emotions.Gradually, I began to assimilate into the college environment. The campus that once felt intimidating started to feel familiar and welcoming. A pivotal moment in my journey was joining Kalinga Jyoti, also known as the Odia Literary Association, a cultural club devoted to celebrating the heritage and traditions of Odisha. Through this organisation, I had the privilege of
participating in events such as the Folk Fiesta dance performance and Ganesh Puja celebrations. These experiences not only strengthened my connection to my roots but also enabled me to share my culture with a broader community.
Today, college no longer feels like an alien space but rather a second home that has nurtured my personal and emotional growth. The process of settling in, though initially arduous, transformed into a journey of self-discovery and belonging. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and the beauty of finding fragments of home in unfamiliar place
